Welcome to my Weekly Blog
Wednesdays with Wildlife & Wonder

Debbie and kids (small)Debbie and kids (small)

Welcome to my blog — a place where wildlife, photography, and the beauty of nature come together.

I’m Debbie Quick, a wildlife and nature photographer based in the Hudson Valley of New York. Most days you’ll find me outdoors with a camera in hand, exploring forests, wetlands, and open fields in search of the wild moments that make nature so magical. From bald eagles soaring over frozen rivers to fox kits playing in spring grass, these are the moments I love to capture and share.

My journey into wildlife photography began years ago when I first discovered a bald eagle nest near my home. Watching that family grow and thrive sparked a passion that has taken me across the Hudson Valley, the Adirondacks, and many other incredible places in search of wildlife and natural beauty.

Every Wednesday, I share a new story here on the blog — a behind-the-scenes look at my photography adventures, memorable wildlife encounters, beautiful places I’ve explored, and the animals that have captured my heart.

  • Some weeks you’ll meet a particular bird or animal that left a lasting impression.
  • Other weeks I’ll take you along on a photography adventure or share a little inspiration from the wild.

If you love wildlife, nature, photography, or simply the quiet wonder of the outdoors, you’re in the right place.

So grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and join me each week for Wednesdays with Wildlife & Wonder.

Because the natural world always has another story waiting to be told.

Nesting Great Horned Owl

I woke this morning to a few inches of wet snow on the ground. I cleaned up the dog pen and the driveway, then sat at my desk to work for a bit. Eventually, I decided to head to the office and I made a couple of stops along the way. I was really hoping to find a red fox in the beautiful white snow, but I had no luck with that. Instead I stumbled ac...

Harbor Seals in the Bay

February 17, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
Today I began my day very early in Seaside Heights, NJ. It was my first time ever being on that island (I think, at least as an adult and from what I can remember) and it was pretty cool. It was off season, so getting around the island was very easy and many locations were closed. I could imagine that during the summer that place must be mad crowde...

Life Bird - Snow Goose

Today was a very busy and super exciting day! Let me first backtrack and say that 2 days ago I received a phone call and an email from Nicole at the Conowingo Dam Visitor Center asking me if I was going to attend the Unveiling of the 2018 Conowingo Dam Bald Eagle Photo Contest. At first I said I couldn't make it, but then Nicole told me I was a wi...

Bitter Cold Day at the Grasslands

February 09, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
Today is my beautiful Bailey's 13th birthday (my older chihuahua) so I stayed home for the first half of the day to spend it with him and my little Bandit who turned 12 just over a week ago. We slept in until 8:30 and just putzed around the house together. Around 12:00 I began getting my gear together and headed out to the Shawangunk Grasslands. I...

Stalking my bird feeders

January 21, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
On Saturday night we had our first storm of the year. The expectation was 7-10 inches of snow, instead we had roughly 4 inches with a solid layer of ice over top. It was heavy and brutal to shovel and my dogs clearly were not amused by it. Then last night temps dropped to zero degrees. That caused everything to not only ice over, but ice within. Wi...

Fun with the swans

It was a long night as I didn't sleep well. I went to bed at 1:00 am and was still awake when the clock struck 2:05. I dozed off for a bit, but then I watched the clock hit 3:05. I dozed for a bit more, again not sure for how long before I saw the clock strike 4:05. After that I just tossed and turned, in and out of sleep and resisted checking the...

Goodbye 2018

December 31, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
Wow, it's hard to believe that today is the last day of 2018! It's been a busy year full of activities and making memories. January and February started off cold, but that didn't stop me from getting out with my camera and looking for wildlife to photograph. I spent most of my time during those two months going to the Shawangunk Grasslands to phot...

A Gull's Beauty

December 23, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
Life has been so hectic and so busy and so the boyz and I decided to sleep in. It was roughly 9:15 when we rolled out of bed to pull the drapes aside and find the sun shining. The sky was the prettiest blue I've seen in what seems like forever, so I quickly took care of the dogs and got myself ready so I could head out. My first stop was to walk V...

Harrier kind of day

December 07, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
I used my final vacation day of the year today and I took advantage of sleeping in just a bit. It was roughly 8:30 when the boyz and I finally rolled out of bed and we took our time starting the day. It's been a while since the boyz had their nails cut, so I figured today was a good day to get them to PetCo for their pedicures. On our way to PetCo...

Christmas at Vanderbilt

December 01, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
I got up early today and headed out to Vanderbilt Mansion thinking that today was the day for the free tours. As soon as I arrived on the property I realized I must have gotten my days mixed up because there were very few cars in the parking lot. At first I contemplating leaving and coming back tomorrow, then I figured I might as well do one of the...

Too Much to Swallow

November 17, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
Today was the second full day at the dam and it was a lot slower than yesterday (not that yesterday was all that busy). We got there before sunrise and sat in the cold and dark before anything took place. It looked like it would be a really active day as there was a lot of flying in the early morning and we could see a lot of eagles across the rive...

Scooter, the Immature Bald Eagle

November 16, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
We arrived in Maryland yesterday, just before the storm began and so we checked into the hotel early and spent the day goofing off. It was a bit boring, but at least we didn't get caught driving in any bad weather. We contemplated going to the dam first, but since we knew it would be a wintry mix (including ice), we opted out from going. This morn...

Harrier's on the Go

November 11, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
Lately I've been one heck of a blog slacker, but that is only because I've been a photographer slacker. We've had so much doom and gloom on the weekends that I haven't been able to get out and photograph wildlife. Things really turned around this weekend. I got out with my camera yesterday, but didn't have much luck finding anything to photograph....

Fall Day Out

October 28, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
As you all may have noticed, I've been a blog slacker in recent weeks, but that is only because the sun is never out when I finally get some time off of work. This morning started out just like most weekends do with the doom and gloom of overcast and rain. The rain finally stopped by 10:30 and the sun tried several times to peak out, but sadly the...

Adirondack Balloon Festival

September 23, 2018  •  Leave a Comment
Every year I try to get to the annual Adirondack Balloon Festival for one of the launches. Usually I catch an evening launch, but this time, for the first time ever I caught a morning launch. I was up at 4:30 this morning and out the door by 5:30. For those of you who know me well, and know that I am NOT a morning person, you are not reading this i...
