Turning My Photography Into Coloring Books

A New Creative Adventure

One of the things I love most about photography is the ability to capture moments in nature and preserve them forever. Over the years I’ve photographed countless animals, landscapes, and beautiful scenes while exploring places like the Hudson Valley, the Adirondack Mountains, and many other locations across the country.

Recently, I decided to take those photographs and turn them into something a little different — coloring books inspired by my photography.

Coloring books are a fun and relaxing activity for people of all ages. They allow you to slow down, be creative, and connect with nature in a different way. For me, creating these books has been a wonderful way to combine my love of wildlife photography with something interactive that others can enjoy.

I’ve officially started building a coloring book series, and I currently have two books available with more on the way.

The first book in my series is my Bald Eagle Coloring Book.

Bald eagles have always been one of my favorite birds to photograph. They are powerful, majestic, and incredibly beautiful. Many of the images that inspired this book were taken in the Hudson Valley region of New York, where I live, as well as at one of the most famous eagle photography locations in the country — Conowingo Dam in Maryland.

During the winter months, Conowingo Dam becomes a hotspot for bald eagles gathering to fish along the Susquehanna River. It’s an incredible place to observe these birds in action.

The cover of this coloring book features a special image from that location. It combines a photograph I took of the Conowingo Dam and the Susquehanna River with another photo I captured of a bald eagle that had just caught a fish. It perfectly represents the excitement and beauty of watching these incredible birds in the wild.

Inside the book, each coloring page is inspired by photographs I’ve taken while out in the field photographing bald eagles.

My second book is the Adirondack Wildlife Coloring Book.

The Adirondack Mountains are one of my favorite places to spend time. For many years I had a campsite in Ticonderoga, New York, which gave me incredible access to nature and wildlife throughout the Adirondack region.

Many of the photographs that inspired this book were taken right at my campsite or during my explorations throughout the Adirondacks.

The cover of the Adirondack Wildlife Coloring Book features a photograph I took of the beautiful Crown Point Bridge, which stretches across Lake Champlain. That image is merged with photos of several animals that appear throughout the coloring book.

When you open the book, you’ll find those same animals turned into coloring pages inspired by the photographs I captured while exploring the area.

Using Technology to Bring the Books to Life

Creating these books has been a creative process that blends photography and modern technology.

I used AI tools to help transform my photographs into clean line art that could be used as coloring pages. AI was also used in designing the book covers.

While the technology helps with the transformation process, every page is still based on real wildlife photographs that I personally captured in nature. My goal was to take real wildlife moments and turn them into something that people could interact with creatively.

More Coloring Books Are On The Way

These first two books are just the beginning.

I’m currently working on additional coloring books to expand the collection. The next book planned in the series will be a Hudson Valley Wildlife Coloring Book, featuring animals and scenes from the region where I live and spend much of my time photographing wildlife.

Beyond that, I have many more ideas for future books, including focusing on events such as, Hot Air Balloons. The challenge now is simply finding the time to create them, because each book takes quite a bit of work to design and produce.

But it’s a process I truly enjoy, and I’m excited to continue building this series.
