What Wildlife Has Taught Me About Life

If you’ve followed my journey, you already know that photography is more than just a hobby for me, it's my passion — it’s a way of managing stress and connecting with the world around me. But what you may not realize is just how much wildlife has quietly taught me about life itself.
Not through words… but through moments.
Moments in nature that stay with you long after you put the camera down.
🌿 Patience: Nature Moves on Its Own Time
Wildlife has taught me patience in a way nothing else ever could. In fact, I had never had patience in my life until I got into wildlife photography.

You can’t rush a bald eagle. There have been countless times I’ve stood in one spot for what felt like forever — waiting, watching, hoping. Sometimes, going home with nothing. And then… sometimes something really good happens. That one magical moment that makes it all worth it. That moment of seeing a young bird take flight for the first time. Or waiting for that opportunity for an eagle to catch a fish. Or have an owl looking at you with frog legs hanging out of its mouth. |

One of my favorite places to walk also has bobcats — but they are incredibly elusive. I’ve gone there hundreds of times, logging miles and miles of walking the trails, always hoping to see one. And then one day… I finally did. It was far away and not in the best light, but none of that mattered. After all that time, it felt like pure magic just to see it and capture a photo. |

Another experience that really stands out is with an American mink. I would occasionally see it, but always in thick brush or swimming away — usually leaving me with nothing more than a “butt shot.” But I kept going back, always watching a downed tree where I hoped it would appear. And one day… it did. After many visits and hours of waiting, the mink finally climbed up onto that very tree. Everything came together, even if just for a moment — and I got the shot. Thankfully, I didn't blink, or I would have missed it. |

Those are the moments that remind me… patience always pays off!
🦅 Resilience: Surviving Against the Odds
Watching wildlife in their natural environment is humbling.
Animals face challenges every single day — harsh weather, predators, finding food, protecting their young — and yet, they keep going.
They don’t give up.
They adapt.
They survive.
I’ve seen eagles battle the wind, birds rebuild nests after they've fallen, and animals push through conditions that most of us would never endure.
It reminds me that we’re stronger than we think.
No matter what life throws at us, we can keep moving forward.
🌸 Presence: Living in the Moment
One of the most beautiful things about wildlife is that they live fully in the present.
They’re not worried about yesterday.
They’re not stressing about tomorrow.
They’re simply… living.

And when I’m out there with my camera, I find myself doing the same. No distractions. It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe — I’m not thinking about work, chores, or anything else life throws my way. I’m simply enjoying what the moment brings. And once you experience that, you realize how important it is to slow down and truly be present. |

I had a moment like that when I went to check on a fox den.
As I observed from a distance, I realized something incredible was happening — there were fox kits in two different locations. It didn’t take long to understand why… mama fox was in the process of moving her babies.

I quickly positioned myself out of her way, making sure not to interfere, but still within view. And then I watched as she gently carried one of her kits to the new den… and then another. Time seemed to stand still. Nothing else mattered in that moment. Not the camera settings, not the photo — just witnessing something so raw, so natural, and so beautiful. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience… and one I will never forget. Moments like that remind me that sometimes, the greatest gift isn’t the photograph… It’s simply being there.

🐣 Innocence: The Beauty of New Life
Some of my favorite moments in wildlife photography involve babies — ducklings, goslings, eaglets, fox kits, fawns.
There’s something so pure about them.
They’re curious.
They’re learning.
They’re completely innocent to the world around them.
Watching them reminds me of how simple life once felt — and how important it is to hold onto that sense of wonder.
It’s a reminder to appreciate the little things… because those are often the moments that matter most.

The more time I spend in nature, the more I realize that we’re all connected.
Every animal, every season, every moment — it all plays a role in something much bigger than ourselves.
Wildlife has a way of grounding you.
It reminds you to step back, breathe, and appreciate the world we’re lucky enough to be part of.
📸 Why I Keep Going Back

People often ask me why I spend so much time out there. Why do I wake up early? And the answer is simple. Because it’s not just about the photograph. It’s about how it makes me feel. It’s about the lessons I’ve learned, the peace I’ve found, the connection I’ve built with nature… and even the friendships I’ve made along the way while enjoying it. I’ve had so many special moments out there. |

One thing I've gotten to enjoy is the countless robin nests where I've had the absolute pleasure of watching those tiny, fragile babies grow in. And they grow fast — it feels like in the blink of an eye, they go from helpless little hatchlings to being ready to take on the world. Getting to witness that process never gets old.

But every once in a while, something truly unexpected happens. One day, I was heading out to photograph osprey. I had a plan, a destination… but along the way, something caught my eye — a small white bird. At first, I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking at. But when I stopped and took a closer look, I realized just how rare and special that moment was. It was an albino robin fledgling. Out of all the robins I’ve seen over the years, this was something completely different — something incredibly rare. Only about one in 30,000 robins are albino. In that moment, nothing else mattered. Not where I was headed. Not what I had planned. Just that one incredible, unexpected encounter. And that’s exactly why I keep going back. Because wildlife has given me so much more than images. It has given me perspective… moments I’ll never forget… and a deeper appreciation for the world around me. |

🌿 Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing wildlife has taught me, it’s this:
Slow down.
Be patient.
Stay strong.
Appreciate the moment.
And never stop being curious about the world around you.
