After work today, I decided to go check in on my favorite Osprey family. I arrived to find both kids in the nest yelling for food and no parents around. I set up my camera and watched and listened to them for roughly 20 minutes when dad flew in with a fish.
The kids immediately started fighting over the fish and I could see mom fly past while dad was trying to let go of the meal and leave. As soon as he did, he hit the road. The one kid grabbed the fish immediately while the other one yelled, fought, and eventually jumped on the head of the kid who initially took it. I watched and was so nervous as they both flapped around while the one kid was on the head and neck of the other. Eventually he jumped down and grabbed the fish.
I was so nervous for the kid who was jumped on as he looked hurt and continued to yell for food in a hunkered down position while the meanie ate the meal. This took place for roughly 20 minutes when a truck with a trailer full of kayaks decided to drive past and make the kids nervous. The kid with the fish tried to fly off with the fish, but dropped it in the nest as he went. The kid who was literally walked all over moved over and began eating while the other kid was out.
After a few minutes, the kid who flew out returned and watched the other kid eat while calling out for more food. Dad finally flew in and landed in a nearby tree and sat there for a while. The mean kid flew over to him and harassed him in hopes that he would bring more food. During this time, mom dropped off a fish to the kid that was still in the nest and he pushed aside the leftovers of the first fish to eat the one mom had brought in.
Eventually both kids wound up in the nest and dad flew off, leaving mom nearby to keep an eye on the youngsters. The truck that went by earlier came by again and the kid who was beaten up flew. Watching him eat and fly made me feel better because he showed signs of not being hurt. Eventually, I decided to leave since the light was getting bad. Both kids and mom were around, no clue where dad was. Possibly out trying to get another fish. It was an interesting evening with my favorite osprey family and I was so relieved that the kid who got beaten up was ok. I'm sure I'll head back over to check on them on Thur or Fri after work.
