What a wonderful day out on my kayak today. I paddled out to Lake Champlain looking for my family of bald eagle's. I didn't see any of them for about 30-40 mins and just paddled around and tried to photograph some Blue Heron's. Eventually one of the little fledglings showed up. He then flew off and next thing I new I saw two of them in the air. Not long after, all three of them were flying around. Eventually, they all perched on trees very close to one another. I paddled around and photographed all of them. Periodically one would take off and fly around, then land on another tree. Honestly, I couldn't keep up and I felt like I was never lined up to catch take-off of the one that would fly. They were having a grand 'ol time hanging out and practicing their flying, take-off and landing skills. As for me, I was having a grand 'ol time watching them. Eventually, two of the babies were sitting side by side and the third was in another tree not far away. By this point, the winds had picked up and Lake Champlain became rather choppy. To the point where it was frustrating and hard to keep still. I wound up wedging myself into some weeds to keep my bearings and sanity. I was there for a bit, just watching the babies as they yelled out for food. Then out of nowhere, they all started going a bit crazy and flew one by one from their spots towards the nest.
My guess was that a parent must of came in from the back and dropped off food. Sure enough because the next thing I new, the parent approached and landed in the tree one of the babies was in. I had just gotten into position to get a few pics of the parent when one of the babies (my guess the third one that headed to the nest) came flying from behind hollering at the parent. Food had apparently come in, but not enough for all the babies because this baby chased that parent right away. Squawking and being aggressive. The poor thing was obviously starving! The baby stopped at the tree for a minute, continuing to squawk and then went flying and squawking away. It was very entertaining to watch and I wish I could have stayed longer, but at this point I had already been out for 4 hrs and the water was so choppy it was frustrating. My total time out was about 4 1/2 hours and almost 8 miles of paddling.
From my understanding, here is what the fledgling was saying..... "Where do you think your going? Get back here and feed me too!"
