Sometimes you don’t have to travel far to enjoy what Mother Nature brings to your doorstep — sometimes, she brings it right to you. For 13 years, I was a seasonal camper at a beautiful campground in Ticonderoga, NY nestled deep in the Adirondack Mountains. And let me tell you… my campsite was a wildlife hotspot of its own. I didn’t need to hike miles into the woods or sit quietly in a blind (though I’ve done plenty of that!) — all I had to do was step outside my camper, and the forest would come to life.

One of my favorite sights was robin nests scattered throughout the campground each spring. With my long telephoto lens, I respected their space while still enjoying the adorable little heads popping up for food. Watching wildlife raise their young is such a privilege — and I cherished every moment.

🦋 Butterflies & Hummingbirds in My Garden

Another magical part of my campsite life was the butterflies and hummingbirds. All summer long, my garden attracted monarchs and eastern tiger swallowtails, drifting through like tiny painted jewels. They loved the vibrant blooms in my flower beds and would land gently on the petals to sip nectar, leaving the garden glowing with color and motion. And then there were the hummingbirds — those little winged rockets zipping from flower to flower, hovering at my feeders, and flashing their iridescent colors in the sunlight. Watching the butterflies flutter gracefully while the hummingbirds darted playfully around them brought a peaceful, whimsical beauty to my days at camp.

🐿️ My Chipmunks: The Real Stars of Camp

Okay… confession time.
I spoiled my chipmunks. A lot.

Every day I put out a buffet worthy of a five-star woodland restaurant: premium bird seed, suet, nectar, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and even fruit platters. Oranges, clementines, grapes, blueberries, strawberries — you name it. The chipmunks loved everything, but nothing beat an orange half. They would suck them dry until they were completely empty.

Penny lived by my dog pen near the front door (in her luxurious underground chippy home). She greeted me every morning and somehow knew the sound of my car. She was my girl.

Woody lived by the woodpile and even introduced me to her babies one year. Watching them peek out for the first time… adorable.

Scrappy was the toughest chipmunk you’d ever meet. He was covered in old battle scars and always came back with a new one. But he was resilient — and I admired him.

Zippy lived the furthest away. It took him forever to run back and forth to collect peanuts. He probably spent his whole day commuting to my feeder and back!

And yes, my chihuahuas learned to coexist with them. Eventually, I’d even catch a chipmunk inside the dog pen hanging out like he owned the place.

🐻 Enter: Tom, the Bear

I always put my feeders away at night because of local bear activity. The same bear returned every spring and fall — and eventually, I named him Tom (as in Peeping Tom).

Why?
Because one night he stood up and looked right into my bedroom window.

Even with all the mischievous squirrels, flower-snatching groundhogs, and surprise bear sightings — every critter brought joy.
