Introduction:
There are 20 species of owls who live and breed in North America (over 250 in the world). There are two different groups of owls: Tytonidae (barn and bay owls) and Strigidae (all other owls).
Tytonid Owls: Barn Owl
Strigidae: Barred Owl, Boreal Owl, Burrowing Owl, Eastern Screech Owl, Elf Owl, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Flammulated Owl, Great Grey Owl, Great Horned Owl, Long-Eared Owl, Mountain Pygmy Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Short-Eared Owl, Snowy Owl, Spotted Owl, Western Screech Owl, and Whiskered Screech Owl.
Owls are generally nocturnal in nature, therefore the best times to potentially see them is either very early morning or around dusk. Although, during the winter months, owls behaviors may change as they tend to migrate in search of food (rodents, raccoons, rabbits, skunks, squirrels, small birds, and other owls). They generally hunt for their prey by perching and pouncing, standing/walking on the ground, or flying low over the ground. Due to owls vocalizing at a low frequency, their sounds tend to travel long distances.
